MASON CITY, IA -- The Mahoning Valley Phantoms' 2008-2009 campaign came to a close Saturday when the Wenatchee Wild rallied for a 3-2 win over the Bismarck Bobcats at North Iowa Ice Arena, sending the Wild (3-1-0, 6 pts) past the Phantoms (2-1-1, 5 pts) for the final spot in Sunday's Robertson Cup championship game to face the two-time defending St. Louis Bandits.

The Phantoms finish the 2008-2009 season with an overall record of 44-21-7, including a 36-17-5 regular season record and an 8-4-2 postseason mark. In qualifying for their fourth straight national tournament, the Phantoms won their second ever North Division playoff championship and became the first team in modern NAHL history to win a decisive Game Five on the road.

Stefan Salituro was Mahoning Valley's leading scorer in both the regular season (14-34-48) and the playoffs (4-7-11).

The Phantoms also made a strong showing in the North American Hockey League's annual awards, securing six postseason honors: Brandon Saad was named NAHL Rookie of the Year; Johnny Meo received the NAHL Community Service Award; Saad was named an All-NAHL forward; Saad was named first-team All-Rookie; Saad and Cullen Lundholm were both named first team All-North Division.

Phantoms Finish Day Four in Second Place at Robertson Cup

5/1/2009 7:05:38 PM

MASON CITY, IA (Friday, May 1st, 2009) – The Mahoning Valley Phantoms are in second place after Day Four at the Robertson Cup, finishing the preliminary round robin with a 2-1-1 record following a 5-2 loss to the St. Louis Bandits Friday.

With five points in the tournament standings, the Phantoms slipped behind the Bandits (3-0-0, 6 pts)—who clinched their way into their third straight national final with the win—for first place in the standings.

Mahoning Valley’s bid to force a rematch of the last two years’ title games with St. Louis, however, is in danger because if the Wenatchee Wild (2-1-0, 4 pts) win their final round robin game over the Bismarck Bobcats on Saturday, the Wild would leapfrog the Phantoms for the other Robertson Cup Finals berth.

“Having our fate out of our own hands is very disappointing,” said Phantoms defenseman and assistant captain Carl Nielsen, “we still believe we’re the best team here, but we let one slip away [Thursday, a 5-4 overtime loss to Wenatchee] and gave away the first half of the game today.

“Now our season is in someone else’s hands, which is never a good thing.”

The Bandits charged out to an early lead when Kyle Greco wired a power play wrist shot past Phatnoms goalie Jordan Tibbett on a feed from Anthany Schooley to put St. Louis up 1-0 with 3:17 left in the first.

Ryan Rashid doubled the St. Louis advantage just 29 seconds later, swatting a Tyler Klein centering pass over Tibbett’s glove for a 2-0 Bandits lead heading into the first intermission.

St. Louis would run their lead to 3-0 with 8:18 left in the second when a Tyler Elbrecht clear-in bounced off the end-boards, hit Tibbett’s leg and rolled into the net.

Rashid would put the Bandits up 4-0 just 40 seconds later, firing a one-time shot behind Tibbett with 7:38 remaining in the middle frame.

Mahoning Valley Head Coach Bob Mainhardt lifted Tibbett after Rashid’s second goal in favor of Garrett Bartus.

The Phantoms started to rally four minutes later when Michael Gunn wired a wrist shot through traffic on a 5-on-3 power play, beating NAHL MVP Keith Kinkaid blocker side to cut the St. Louis edge to 4-1.

1:41 later, Mahoning Valley captain Johnny Meo was hauled down on a shorthanded breakaway by Kris Reinthaler and awarded a penalty shot on Kinkaid.

Meo faked the shot to the right, freezing Kinkaid, and pulled the puck to the far post and slid a backhander past the St. Louis netminder to cut the lead to 4-2 with 1:59 left in the second.

“I had a move planned on the original breakaway,” said Meo, “and I knew that with the dirty ice so late in the period that I couldn’t get a great shot. I hoped he’d bite on the fake but I didn’t expect him to go all the way down for it. After that I pulled it back and had the whole net to shoot at.”

The Phantoms would create good chances on Kinkaid over the first ten-plus minutes of the third period, but Kinkaid turned away all 10 Mahoning Valley shots in the final frame.

Schooley added some insurance for the Bandits with 6:40 left in regulation, beating Bartus in transition for the final 5-2 margin.

Bartus finished with 13 saves in 27 minutes but did not factor in the decision.

Kinkaid picked up his ninth playoff win against two losses, stopping 20 shots in the victory.

If the Phantoms make the final game, they will gain a rematch with the Bandits on Sunday at 3:00 PM at the North Iowa Ice Arena.

The Robertson Cup Finals represent USA Hockey’s Tier II Junior A National Championship.

The game will be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio 1240, WBBW-AM, and worldwide at MVPPhantoms.com via B2 Networks.

Phantoms Gain Point, Retain First Place on Day Three

4/30/2009 7:29:59 PM

MASON CITY, IA (Thursday, April 30th, 2009) – The Mahoning Valley Phantoms guaranteed themselves sole possession of first place in the Robertson Cup Standings after a 5-4 overtime loss in Game Three against the Wenatchee Wild Thursday.

With the Phantoms leading 4-0 halfway through the second, the Wild started a rally that would see them to their second victory in three games.

Wenatchee got on the board with 8:24 left in the second period when Wild forward Mitch Torrel scooped a Junior Cadiz rebound past Phantoms netminder Jordan Tibbett to cut the Phantoms’ lead to 4-1.

With time winding down in the middle frame DJ Vandercook, Wenatchee’s leading scorer, taking a pass in transition from Nic Dowd and lifting a backhand over Tibbett make it 4-2 with 1:07 left in the second.

Vandercook struck again just 33 seconds into the third firing past Tibbett in traffic to chop the lead down to 4-3.

Four minutes later, on Wenatchee’s second power play of the game, Brandon Burrell slapped the puck under a screened-out Tibbett to tie the game 4-4.

Phantom forward Nick Kenney appeared to restore the Phantoms lead with just over three minutes left on the power play, banging a rebound over Wild relief goalie Mathieu Dugas, but head official Dan Dreger ruled that the net had come dislodged before the puck crossed the line.

Regulation ended with the 4-4 tie and after a quick chance for Phantom forward Stefan Salituro in the overtime period, Vandercook completed the hat trick, taking a pass from Dowd and chopped a backhander past Tibbett just 56 seconds into the extra period to give the Wild the come-from-behind win.

Tibbett finished with 33 saves but dropped to 2-0-1 in Robertson Cup play.

Brandon Saad opened the scoring for the Phantoms, taking a Carl Nielsen pass into the Wenatchee zone and rocketing a wrist shot over the blocker of starting goalie Mac Carruth for a 1-0 lead for the Phantoms with 5:46 left in the first.

Alex Lippincott would follow just 1:09 later, redirecting a Josh Bussell centering feed past Carruth to make it 2-0 Mahoning Valley.

The Phantoms would extend their lead early in the second when George Saad poked a Cole Schneider rebound past Carruth, ending the starting netminder’s day as Wenatchee head coach Paul Baxter lifted him in favor of Dugas.

Just over two minutes later Michael Pateras beat Dugas on the first shot he faced, ripping a transition wrister over Dugas’ blocker for the 4-0.

Dugas stopped the next 18 shots he faced to pick up his first win at the Robertson Cup and give Wenatchee a 2-1-0 record (4 pts) in round robin play.

The Phantoms’ 2-0-1 record gives them five points in the round-robin and first place after three days. Wenatchee sits in second place with St. Louis—who plays the late game Thursday against Bismarck—sitting in third at 1-0-0.

North Iowa (0-2-0, 0 pts) and Bismarck (0-1-0, 0 pts) are tied for fourth in the preliminary standings. North Iowa cannot catch the Phantoms in the standings.

The Phantoms close out round robin play on Friday with a 4:00 PM game against the two-time defending Robertson Cup champion St. Louis Bandits at North Iowa Ice Arena.

Mahoning Valley finished 2-2-0 in their regular season series with the Bandits; the home team won all four games.

The two teams with the top records after round robin play wraps up on Saturday will advance to Sunday’s Robertson Cup finals, representing USA Hockey’s Tier II Junior A National Championship.

Friday’s game will be broadcast locally on ESPN Radio 1240, WBBW-AM, and worldwide at MVPPhantoms.com. The pregame show will begin at 3:45 PM.

All Phantoms merchandise is on sale for 40% off at the Phantoms Team Shop at both the Chevrolet Centre and the Ice Zone while the Phantoms are in the playoffs. Call (330) 965-7500 for more information.
