2003-2004
September 19, 2003- The Phantoms fall in their franchise opener, 3-2, to the U.S. National Under-18 Team in Ann Arbor. Defenseman Charley Fetzer scores the first goal in Phantoms franchise history.
September 20, 2003- The following evening, the Phantoms would earn their first point in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Under-17 Team in an overtime shootout.
September 27, 2003- The Phantoms record their first franchise win, 3-2, over the Under-17 Team, in their first home game at the Ice Zone. The team proceeds to win six straight games and reel of an 11-game unbeaten streak (8-0-3). During the streak, goaltender Tyler Sims registers the team's first two shutouts, including a 3-0 win over the eventual national champion Texas Tornado at the NAHL Showcase in Minnesota on October 15.
November 1, 2003- Matt Lombardo scores with 3:54 remaining in regulation to defeat the Soo Kewadin Indians 2-1. It was the Indians first loss of the season after starting 13-0-5.
January 3, 2004- Rob Rassey becomes the first Phantom to record a hat trick, in a 7-4 win over the Toledo Ice Diggers at the Ice Zone. He scored all three goals in the first period.
February 5, 2004- Charley Fetzer accepts a scholarship at Miami of Ohio, becoming the first Phantom to be awarded an NCAA Division 1 hockey scholarship.
March 27, 2004- The Phantoms defeat the Cleveland Barons 6-4 to complete their inaugural season with a 28-21-7 record; tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division with the U.S. National Team's Development Program. Though the Phantoms had a 6-2-1 record head-to-head against Team USA, the red, white, and blue were awarded the final playoff spot based on the league's second playoff tiebreaker; goal differential for the season. After the season, the NAHL would replace their second playoff tiebreaker by using 'head-to-head record.' In all 36 different players suited up for the Phantoms in their first season.
2004-2005
October 9, 2004- The Phantoms defeat the Toledo Ice Diggers 7-1 at the Ice House, tying a team record with goals from seven different players. The teams combined for 192 penalty minutes, including two extended stoppages in the third period for fighting. In the end, the Phantoms finished 5 for 15 on the power play.
October 22, 2004- The Phantoms defeat the Walpole Stars 8-0 at the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. The Phantoms set a new franchise record, tied just 13 days earlier, as they received goals from eight different players.
November 13, 2004- Overcoming a 4-2 deficit, the Phantoms beat the Cleveland Barons, 5-4, in overtime at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of the Ohio State University. Rob Rassey scored the game-winning goal.
December 4, 2004- With a 5-3 win over the U.S. National Under-17 Team, the Youngstown Phantoms sit in first place in the North Division standings for the first time in franchise history.
December 22, 2004- Anthony Canzoneri scored with 31.5 seconds remaining in regulation as the Phantoms defeated Toledo 3-2 on a record 66 shots on goal. Ice Diggers goaltender Justin Marriott made 63 saves in the loss.
January 14, 2005- Aaron Rhyner sets a Phantom record with four goals as the Phantoms rout the Springfield Jr. Blues 10-1 as the Phantoms hosted the NAHL North Division Showcase. The 10 goals were also a team record.
January 15, 2005- Rhyner followed up his four-goal performance the night before with three more goals in a 6-3 win over Toledo; becoming the only Phantom and the first player in recent NAHL history to record hat tricks in consecutive games.
January 22, 2005- A winter storm that dumped upwards of nine inches of snow across northern Ohio forced the cancellation of the Phantoms road game against the U.S. National Team in Ann Arbor.
February 9, 2005- Head Coach Bob Mainhardt leads the NAHL All-Star Team to a 3-1 win over the defending champion Texas Tornado at the NAHL All-Star Game in Frisco, Texas. Phantoms forward Kyle Laughlin scored for the All-Stars while defenseman Mark Zarbo led a blue line stand.
February 12, 2005- Less than two months after registering 66 shots on goal in a game, the Phantoms topped yet another mark by firing 69 shots on net. However, Cleveland Barons netminder Bobby Jarosz stopped 67 of those attempts in a 4-2 win over the Phantoms. The Phantoms tied the game at 2-2 on a goal from Owen Meyer with 4:26 left in regulation. At that point, the Phantoms had outshot Cleveland 24-0 in the third period. But the Barons regained the lead just 35 seconds later and withstood a 31 shot barrage from the Phantoms in the final 20 minutes.
February 19, 2005- The Phantoms snapped a six-game losing streak with a 10-3 win over Toledo at the Ice Zone. Rob Rassey and Owen Meyer became the first Phantom duo to record hat tricks in the same game. Meyer scored all three of his goals in the second period. Defenseman Chris Smith set a team record with four assists.
March 26, 2005- The Youngstown Phantoms clinched their first ever playoff berth by forcing overtime, before losing 3-2 to the Soo Kewadin Indians in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The Phantoms would meet the Indians in the North Division semifinals. The Soo sweep the Phantoms in three games, winning the final two in overtime by identical 4-3 scores. The Phantoms led 3-1 and 3-0 in games 2 and 3 respectively before the Indians rallied to win the best-of-five series.
2005-2006
October 29, 2005- After starting the season with 11 games on the road, the Phantoms defeat the expansion Traverse City North Stars 7-5 in their home opener before a sell-out crowd at the Ice Zone.
November 18, 2005- In the second period, the Phantoms score five goals over an eight-minute span to defeat the Alpena Ice Diggers 5-3. The Phantoms finished with an incredible 34 shots on goal in the middle period, while goaltender Ryan Zapolski fought off 20 Alpena shots in a third period comeback attempt by the Ice Diggers.
December 3, 2005- Zapolski stops 51 shots in a 4-3 win over Alpena. Once again, he would make 20 saves in the third period.
January 8, 2006- Mike Maltese scores three goals and Milan Drevenak added two scores in a 6-3 win over Traverse City, extending the Phantoms home record to 11-0-2 on the season. The streak would come to an end five days later in a 3-2 loss to Cleveland.
January 20, 2006- After goaltenders Bryce Merriam (Cleveland) and Zapolski (Alpena) pitch back-to-back shutouts for the first time in franchise history, Alpena breaks the scoreless streak at 134 minutes and 24 seconds. But the Phantoms rallied with a five-goal third period to win 7-5 at the North Division Showcase at the Ice Zone.
January 21, 2006- The Phantoms face the U.S. National Under-18 Team at the brand-new 5,700-seat Chevrolet Centre in downtown Youngstown. Before an estimated crowd of 1,200, the Phantoms hold a 3-2 second period lead before Team USA takes over and wins 9-4.
January 22, 2006- Returning to the Ice Zone, the Phantoms did what no other NAHL team had done in recent time. They held the U.S. National Under-18 Team scoreless for nearly 40 minutes. Leading 1-0 after the first period, the Phantoms allowed a game-tying power play goal with 23 seconds left in the second period. They were shorthanded by two men midway through the third period when defenseman Erik Johnson, the eventual number one overall pick in the 2006 NHL Draft, scored to give the U.S. the lead for good and a 4-1 win to conclude the North Division Showcase.
January, 27, 2006- The Phantoms tie a team record with eight different goal scorers in an 8-2 win in Traverse City.
February 18, 2006- The Phantoms shutout the Springfield Jr. Blues 3-0 at the Ice Zone to win their franchise record 29th game with 10 games remaining in the regular season.
March 2, 2006- The NAHL announces that the Mahoning Valley Phantoms will host the 2006 Robertson Cup National Championship Tournament at the Ice Zone.
March 4, 2006- Captain Anthony Ciraulo scores twice in a 7-4 win in Traverse City. It was Ciraulo's 200th junior hockey game and 123rd with the Phantoms.
March 25, 2006- A 5-1 loss to the U.S. National Under-17 Team ends the Phantoms regular season with a franchise best 34-20-4 record. They finish third in the North Division.
March 30, 2006- The Phantoms win their first ever playoff game, defeating Cleveland 2-1 in Game 1 of their North Division Semifinal. Ryan Zapolski made 34 saves, including a third-period penalty shot attempt.
April 8, 2006- Jason Simota's goal at 5:25 of overtime lifted the Phantoms to a 6-5 win over Cleveland, forcing a fifth and deciding game in Cleveland.
April 9, 2006- The Phantoms rally from a 3-0 deficit, but fall to Cleveland 5-2 in Game 5 of their semifinal series. Regardless, the Phantoms advance to the Robertson Cup as the host team. Meanwhile, the Barons would advance to the Robertson Cup after defeating the U.S. National Under-17 Team in a seventh game division final.
May 12, 2006- In the Robertson Cup semi-finals, the Phantoms trail top-seeded Bozeman 1-0 in the final minute of play when they pull goaltender Ryan Zapolski for an extra attacker. Icedogs forward Ryan Bunger launches a loose puck 190 feet from his own goal line into an empty net. Josh Heidinger, the NAHL's leading scorer, would add another empty-netter, his second goal of the game, to dash the Phantoms hopes of a championship with a 3-0 win. The Phantoms would fall to the Southern Minnesota Express, 6-2, in the Bronze Medal game the following day.
2006-2007
September 29, 2006- The Phantoms overcome their largest deficit ever to defeat the U.S. National Under-17 Team 5-4. Trailing 4-1 late in the second period, the Phantoms score four even-strength goals to pull off the comeback.
Miles Winter's blocked a clearing attempt en route to his second goal of the game with 38.6 seconds left in regulation for the win.
September 30, 2006- One day after their comeback heroics, the Phantoms complete their sweep with an 8-6 win. Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the Phantoms erupt for six goals on 12 shots in a span of four minutes and 47 seconds.
October 21, 2006- After defeating the U.S. National Under-17 Team 4-3 in an overtime shootout the previous night, the Phantoms face the Under-18 squad. Upon their arrival, they are informed that the game was moved to a larger Olympic ice sheet that night.
James vanRiemsdyk, the eventual number two overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, would score four goals in a 10-1 win over the Phantoms. For the next 62 days, the Phantoms would not lose again.
November 3, 2006- Nathan Longpre records a second-period hat trick in the Phantoms' 7-2 home opener over Traverse City.
November 10, 2006- Coach Bob Mainhardt wins his 100th regular season game, a 5-0 win at home over Marquette.
November 12, 2006- The Phantoms sweep Marquette with a 6-1 win for a team-record seventh straight victory. Goaltender Ryan Zapolski makes 35 saves and becomes the first Phantom goaltender to record two assists in a game.
December 1, 2006- Dustin Cloutier's hat trick gives the Phantoms an 8-3 win over Team USA. The win is the Phantoms' 13th straight as they claim sole possession of first place in the North Division. The Phantoms would hold or share the top spot for the rest of the regular season.
December 8, 2006- Janis Purins ties a team record by scoring four goals in a 7-1 win over Alpena. Both teams were tied for first heading into the game.
December 20, 2006- Chris Fairbanks scores twice and Ryan Zapolski earns his third shutout of the season as the Phantoms blank Team USA 3-0 for their 19th straight win, one shy of the NAHL record. Two nights later, the streak would come to an end when the Marquette Rangers defeated the Phantoms 3-2 at Lakeview Arena.
March 2, 2007- Despite the net dislodged off its moorings behind goaltender Ryan Zapolski, Marquette's Jake Hauswirth scores with seven seconds remaining in regulation to give the Rangers a 5-4 win over the Phantoms at the Ice Zone. The loss is the first at home this season after the Phantoms won their first 19 games in Boardman.
March 4, 2007- With four weeks left in the regular season, the Phantoms defeat Marquette 6-4 to capture their first North Division regular season title in team history.
March 31, 2007 – The Phantoms wrap up the regular season with a 3-1 victory over the U.S. National Team. The win closes out the Phantoms most successful season to date. The team finishes with the best record in the NAHL at 47-14-1.
April 9, 2007 – With a 6-2 victory, the Phantoms sweep the Marquette Rangers in the opening round of the playoffs.
April 21, 2007 – The Phantoms win their sixth consecutive playoff game and ninth consecutive overall, winning 6-2 and sweeping the U.S. National Development team. The win sends the team to the Robertson Cup Championships in Alaska.
May 6, 2007 – The Phantoms rally off three more wins in Alaska, making it nine consecutive, before falling to the St. Louis Bandits in the championship game, finishing in second place in the NAHL.
